 CORALLINE ALGAE

Coralline algae, also known as coralline crust, are a group of calcareous marine algae that play a significant role in reef ecosystems. They are named after their hard, coral-like appearance and are found in various colors such as pink, purple, red, and occasionally green.

Coraline algae are found in both tropical and temperate waters worldwide, particularly in shallow areas with moderate to high light levels. They attach themselves to various substrates such as rocks, coral skeletons, shells, and even other algae, forming encrusting or branching structures.

One distinguishing feature of coraline algae is their ability to deposit calcium carbonate, which contributes to their hardened structure and provides a protective layer. This calcification process helps them withstand wave action, grazing, and other environmental stresses. Over time, coraline algae can contribute to the formation of reefs by serving as a foundational organism, providing a surface for the attachment and growth of other marine organisms like corals.

Coraline algae have ecological importance as they create habitats for a variety of marine life, including invertebrates, fish, and crustaceans. They also play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and reef resilience. Moreover, their vibrant colors add visual appeal to coral reefs, making them aesthetically pleasing.
